Darwin E. Lay was born September 10, 1832, and departed this life September 3. 1908, aged 75 years. 11 months and 17 days. He was born in Niagara County, New York. The youngest of a family of eight, two of whom are still living. When he was four years old his parents moved from New York State to southern Michigan with ox teams and covered wagons, locating in Kalamazoo County. Here amidst the prairies and unbroken forests, and indian boys for companions he grew up to manhood. At the age of 25 he was united in marriage to Cynthia M. Porter making a home in Calhoun County, here he lived until the death of his wife in 1894. At the age of 18 he gave his heart to God and united with the M. E. church at West Leroy, and has lived an earnest consistent member. For about 30 years lie faithfully discharged the duties of Trustee and Steward, he was a firm believer in the ''old time" religion and loved the “Cause of Christ." He thought nothing of walking five miles to a prayer meeting, and often went ten miles to attend revival services. Although of a retiring disposition he believed in aggressive work for God. He passed away without a struggle, simply went to sleep, to wake we trust on the other shore, and greet the loved ones gone before. The funeral was held from the M. E. church, conducted by Rev. W. M. P. Jerrett. Interment in the Farwell cemetery. The Climax Crescent Sept. 17, 1908 page 1
