Studied architecture and surveying in London then spent 2 years with the engineer Robert Stephenson at Newcastle Upon Tyne. He took over the family properties in Tasmania in 1844. After marrying Anne Hortle they lived at Woolmers, then Cheshunt. William took up botanical studies in England, then moved to Hobart. He was elected to the House of Assemby in 1860 and 1861. He suffered financial difficulty for some time before he died.
