Stateman. He served as the third Prime Minister of Denmark. He held office from 21 April 1853 to 12 December 1854. Before becoming prime minister he attended the University of Copenhagen, became a lawyer, and was admitted to the bar in 1799. From 1825 to 1848, he was a legal adviser to the Danish government. He drew up the constitution which was granted in 1831 and was a cabinet minister from 1842 to 1848. He is best remembered for his unpopular conservatism as prime minister leading to his impeachment, acquittal, and retirement to private life. He was also known for his prolific writing throughout his career on such diverse subjects as philosophy, Danish and Norwegian law, and Scandinavian politics, and as the editor of several noted journals.
