Sixth Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco, California, serving from 1977 to 1995. President of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, now known as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, from 1977 to 1980. Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, from 1971 to 1977. The son of Raphael "Ralph" J. and Elizabeth "Bess" (Carroll) Quinn of Riverside, California, the Most Reverend John R. Quinn studied for the priesthood in Rome, and was ordained there for the Diocese of San Diego, California, on July 19, 1953. A scholar and an educator, he served as the rector of Immaculate Heart Seminary and as the provost of the University of San Diego, and he was named an auxiliary bishop of San Diego in 1967. During and after his eighteen years as Archbishop of San Francisco, he was a strong advocate for social justice, racial and gender equality, care for the sick, poor and oppressed, and for ecumenism and interfaith cooperation. An outspoken critic of the arms race, nuclear proliferation, military aggression and capital punishment, he was a frequent contributor to the Jesuit magazine America. After shepherding his city through the AIDS crisis and the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, and having faced numerous problems such as the clergy sex abuse scandal and declining church attendance, he opted for early retirement in 1995. Known for his progressive views while remaining ever faithful to the teachings of the Church, he published two books as Archbishop Emeritus, "The Reform of the Papacy: The Costly Call to Christian Unity" (1999), and "Ever Ancient, Ever New: Structures of Communion in the Church" (2012).
