Born October 6, 1929 in Mecklenburg County, NC, he was a graduate of Berry Hill High School, and NC State University, class of 1951, where he received a degree in Dairy Manufacturing and was a member of Alpha Zeta Fraternity, the Honorary Scholastic Agricultural Fraternity. He was a member of Steele Creek Presbyterian Church for about 70 years and served there in various capacities including Sunday School teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School, Deacon, Elder, several times as Clerk of Session, and on various committees. He served his country during the Korean Conflict serving with the 10th Army Division, 7th Regiment Infantry, and served for one year in Korea. He worked for Sealtest Foods for 18 years and then for 30 years as a manufacturer's representative for a number of companies serving the ice cream and milk industry. He was a member of the Steele Creek Volunteer Fire Department where he served as Chief as well as Chairman of the Board for more than 20 years. He was a gardener, if it bloomed, he loved it, especially roses, azaleas, camellias, and peonies. Joe was also known for his humanitarian efforts through his contributions to the World Changers Association.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty McCorkle Brown; son and daughter-in-law, David and Jeannie Brown of Shelby; daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Jo and Chuck Smith of Cherryville and Trudy and Kevin Brookshire of Granite Falls; brothers, Paul J. Brown, Jr. of Hendersonville, Robert O. Brown of York, SC, and William F. Brown of Charlotte; seven grandchildren, Heather Elaine Foster, Angela Denise Foster, Dana Marie Berkovics, Joseph David Brown, Andrew Ellis Brown, Kaylee Regan Brookshire, and Shelby Laine Brookshire; and five great grandchildren, Corbin Berkovics, Conner Berkovics, Seth Foster, Rylie Jo Foster, and Trevor Otto Foster. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Jackson Brown, Sr. and Frankie Byrum Brown; brothers, Calvin D. Brown and Elbert G. Brown, and sister, Nancy Brown Ridenhour.
