He is listed on the 1900 Census as living with his widowed mother Annie and his son James L. Hatch born in Oct. 1889. (It is thought his first wife died in childbirth with son James.) He worked as a clerk in a grocery store. He married his second wife Amanda Susan "Sue" Jarman-Lewis (my great-grandmother), in 1904 and they are listed on the 1930 Census as living in New Bern, NC. They had a daughter named Nora Jane Hatch who was born 27 Sep 1906, and who most likely suffered from Down's Syndrome and lived her late adult life at Dix Hill in Raleigh, NC. "Sue" was my great-grandmother who raised my grandfather and his brother on her own after my grandfather Riley Thomas "Big Bud" Lewis died in August 1895 of pneumonia-- my grandfather Richard "Lee" was 2 yrs old and she was 6 months pregnant with Riley Gardner Lewis. Though Edmond did not adopt the boys, he did help raise them.
