Durango resident Marjorie Reed Murphy died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, at Sunshine Gardens West in Durango. She was 84.
Mrs. Murphy was born to Edwin "Ted" and Josephine "Jo" Reed on Oct. 11, 1927, in Richland Center, Wis. She graduated from high school in 1945 in Stevens Point, Wis., and went on to earn a degree as a medical technologist in 1949 from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
Mrs. Murphy and two college friends drove a convertible Studebaker to Phoenix, where they found employment at the Good Samaritan Medical Center. It was there she met her future husband, James "Jim" Murphy, where he was attending flight school. On Aug. 10, 1952, the couple married in Gallup, N.M.
For the first 18 years of their marriage, the Murphys followed postings in Mr. Murphy's Air Force career to Sumter, S.C., Virginia Beach, Va., and France.
In 1970, they retired to Durango. Mrs. Murphy continued to raise their children and also returned to work. She was a lab technician at the old Mercy Hospital for about six years.
"Marjorie enjoyed bridge with her friends, travel, reading, playing the piano and she was a wonderful cook," her family said. She was a Bronze Life Master in bridge and taught some bridge at the Durango-La Plata Senior Center.
The Murphys also attended Air Force Reconnaissance reunions and traveled on cruises to the Panama Canal, Norway and Alaska.
Mrs. Murphy was preceded in death by her son, Ted Reed Murphy. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, James Murphy of Durango (d. 2017); sons Dan Murphy of Durango (d. 2021) and Mark Murphy of Preston, Md. (d. 2019); five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two nieces and a nephew.
