Jack was the eldest child of LeRoy (Roy) Hardgrave, and Lula Grace Redman, and was born in Dalhart, Texas. He and his family moved to Whittier, Los Angeles County, California, in the mid-1920's, where he grew up. He attended Whittier Union High School, and in 1939, married Nadine Marie DeVilbiss. In 1943, he enlisted as a cadet in the Army Air Force, where he became a B-25 Fight Instructor. He passed away in 1985, and his remains were cremated and buried at sea.
