Matilda Emma Wiley was born in Decatur, Georgia, to Frances R. Woodall and John Wiley. John Wiley passed away at a very young age, and her mother re-married and eventually moved to Arkansas, along with Emma. There she met Lewis B. Hardgrave and they were married at Fort Smith. She was a very resilient woman of great faith, and endured many hardships living on the edge of the frontier for many years. She lived to be 82 years old, and long enough to witness many profound changes in our country. During her life she always went by Emma.
