An international rugby player for Ireland and the British and Irish Lions, and an Air Vice Marshal in the British Air Force. In his rugby career he played twenty five Tests for Ireland and captained the team in the 1931/2 season. He toured Australasia in 1930 with the British and Irish Lions and played in the five Tests. He is credited with suggesting the introduction of some Irish green into the Lions uniform, which has since become the norm. In WWII he served in senior positions in the air force in Crete and Egypt, and after the war he continued in various commanding positions till his retirement in 1958.
