Lewis Edward Berry Jr.

Lewis Berry, 78, of Eagle Lake, passed away Wednesday June 21, 2017, at the Methodist Hospital-Medical Center in Houston.

Lewis was born in Houston on December 17, 1938, to Lewis E. Berry and Zora Henderson Berry. He was married to Sally Berry.

He attended South Texas College, University of Houston pre-Law, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree, and continued to receive a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree, at Bates College of Law UH, St Albans Center where he received a Bachelor of Theology, (Honorary, Granted in Recognition of Completion of Diocese of the Southwest Clergy Training Program).

Additional undergraduate and graduate level studies at Graduate School of U.S. Department of Agriculture, Washington, D.C., Saint Thomas University, Houston, and University of Texas, Austin.

Honors and school activities include Texas State Championship Moot Court Team. Bates College of Law Southwest Regional Championship Moot Court Team, Bates College of Law Garwood Award for Scholastic Merit, Bates College of Law, and Valedictorian, South Texas College.
His professional licenses include Bar of the United States Supreme Court, Bar of the State of Texas, and Real Estate Broker, State of Texas.

His professional history includes independent attorney, real estate broker, land developer and investor with operations in Juneau County Wisconsin and the following Texas counties, Bastrop, Bosque, Brown, Burnet, Callahan, Coleman, Colorado, Eastland, Galveston, Harris, Montgomery, Smith and Travis.

Office of Interstate Land Sales Registration, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Washington D.C., (regulatory agency for the land sales industry), Enforcement Division (Responsible for Enforcement of Interstate Land Sales Full Disclosure Act in 13 state region.

He also served as acting Deputy Director of Enforcement Division (nationwide enforcement responsibilities) Consumer Protection Officer Nationwide Enforcement and Consumer Protection, Special Assistant to Administrator Office of General Counsel, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Washington, D.C., Home Mortgage and Litigation Di-visions, Republican Party of Texas, Research Director and Special Counsel.
Management of issue, statistical, and opposition research; legal advice to party candidates and officials; election law legal matters, convention rules and credentials; statewide election day ballot security program, Office of Attorney General of Texas, Austin.
Assistant Attorney General, State and County Affairs Division.

Legal representation of state agencies; advice to state and county officials concerning their powers and responsibilities; preparation of official legal opinions. Private legal practice, Houston and Eastland.

Mr. Berry was a veteran of four years service in United States Air Force. He was baptized May 14,1944, in the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Houston, Ordination to Diaconate on March 30, 1983, in Saint Matthias Church in Austin, and Ordination to Priesthood on December 10, 1983, at All Saints Church, San Antonio.

He converted to Catholicism and was a member of Our Lady of Walsingham Church.

He is survived by his wife, Sally, son, Ross Berry of Virginia, daughters, Dara Berry and Arwen Zemborain both of Austin, stepson Augustus Brandon Cope and step-daughter Mary Rutledge, brothers Robert Lamar and wife Cora Lamar, Thomas Lamar and wife Audrey, sister Pat Simmons-Tenorio and his dear cousin Martha Hargrove.
His grandchildren are Heathryn Berry Salvina, Ransom Berry, Gwyneth Berry, Pierce Berry, Elspeth Berry, Chet King, Rio Sanchez, Dalton Gaudin, Zane Zemborain, Kyle Zemborain, Aurora Zemborain, step-grand¬children, Ashley Cope, Joseph Cope, Dalen Rutledge, Annalise Rutledge, Tori Rutledge, Sam Kilgore, Jake Kilgore, and Great grandchildren Giusepe, Romano, Costanino, and Rhylan Dewey.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Zora Margaret Wilcoxen, Susan Connell, and a step-daughter Joyce Kilgore.

Thank you to the medical team in the DeBakey Heart Unit who worked for so long to keep his heart going, and to the EMT, Eagle Lake Fire Department, and police officers who made so many house calls.

And especially to the visiting clergy at Methodist, who kept his spirit going to the end.

Funeral Services were held at the Parish of the Nativity Catholic Church in Eagle Lake, Thursday, June 29 at 10 a.m.
Burial was at the Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake.

Honorary pallbearers were Robert Eubank, A. W. Hines, Bob Parrot, and Kent Hargett.
