John Philpot Curran was born in County Fermanagh Ireland, the son of Patrick Curran and Ellen (Green) Curran. John immigrated to America in 1881, eventually settling in Wilmington, Delaware.

John married Elizabeth McKeown (a native of County Antrim Ireland) on 31 Oct 1885, in St Patrick's Catholic Church in Wilmington.

They were the parents of Margaret Theresa (born 1886), Helen Marie (born 1888), John Philpot (born 1890), Richard Francis (born 1891), Thomas Hugh (born 1894/died 1896), Bernard Alan (born 1895), Matthew (twin of Bernard/died at 1 day old), Adeline (born and died 1898), Hugh Edward (born 1899), and Francis Matthew (born 1902).

John worked as a foreman for the B&O railroad, in Wilmington, for many years.

His wife died in 1929, and John followed her nine years later. (He died exactly one week before his little granddaughter, Anne Marie Curran, died of cancer). Grandpop Curran is remembered fondly as a quiet and kind person by his grandchildren.
