Dr. Don was born April 4, 1932 in St. Louis, MO to parents Edgar and Claudia Barebo, and passed away July 6, 2017. His brothers, Harold, Robert, and twin Ronald all preceded him in death.
He was a cabinet maker by trade, pastor by calling, and builder by passion. Don was passionate about America and the Armed Forces that protect our freedom, joining the Army in 1949, transferring in 1951 to the Air Force – serving in the Korean War.
Don married Ellen on Dec. 20, 1952 and was married 60 years. They are survived by their three children, Pamela (Milton Hirst), Paul (Sandi), and Paula (Athan Burch). Seven grandchildren, Heather (Kevin Batchelder), Terra (Ryan Roper), Rhiannon (Tim Turner), Savannah (Joshua Raffesberger), Benjamin Burch, September (Dane Soderberg), and Josiah Burch (deceased) and twelve great-grandchildren. He remarried to Bettie Coleman on Jan. 17, 2016.
He earned degrees in Biblical Studies, Counseling and a Doctorate of Ministry and pastored for over 50 years – serving churches in 6 states, the last being Utah, through the Church of God, Nazarene and Baptist denominations. He also volunteered his building expertise to mission ministries in other countries. Don has served as a hospital, hospice, and police chaplain in both New Mexico and Utah, and was a certified crisis chaplain for FEMA during the St. George, UT floods of 2005, Oklahoma storms of 2006, Crandall Canyon Mine tragedy in 2007, and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Upon retiring, he earned Presidential Volunteer Service awards from 2008-2017, devoting over 2000 hours – many served at Hill Aerospace Museum in Roy as the Volunteer Coordinator. Additionally, he was proud of 3 tandem skydive jumps he made – the first at age 80. He will be deeply missed by family and friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Thursday, July 13, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the mortuary.
