Our 4th of July was a little more meaningful this year as our family gathered to say goodbye to our Wonderful Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Friend.
Marie Louise Stone, age 102¾, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 4, 2017.
She as born on Sept. 7, 1914, to Joseph and Clothilda Katri in Waddington, California. Marie was the second eldest of five children and she helped her mother with the younger siblings and chores on the family farm.
After high school, she attended Providence Nursing School in Oakland, California. Stricken by pneumonia while in school, she was hospitalized for three months. She reminded us often, “I almost died.” She obviously went on for many more wonderful years!
Marie’s first nursing job was at St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, California. After working  for nine years, she enlisted in the Air Force to serve her country. She was very patriotic and was known to get a little upset if anyone moved her flag in her living room. During her Air Force training in Santa Maria, California, she met the love of her life, George Stone.
They were married as the war ended and began their lives together in Vallejo. Soon came along their first three children, Patricia, Bernadette and Rodney. After Rodney was born they moved to Fairfield where Marie went to work at the Solano County Hospital. Michael, their fourth child, was born and they thought their family was complete. . . . Oh yes, at 43, Marie had a surprise and their fifth child, George, was born and was named after his dad. Shortly after he was born, Dad had a severe heart attack and stroke that left him paralyzed.
Marie’s life became quite difficult as she was working full time as a nurse, raising five children and caring for an invalid husband. She never complained about how hard she had it but embraced the family and made the best of it.
In 1962, George Sr. passed away. Marie worked hard to keep her family together, instilled her children with good values and a great work ethic. One of Mom’s favorite sayings was, “Never give up!” She was very petite, but she was such a strong little lady.
For the last 17 years she lived in Napa with her daughter Bernie and son-in-law, David, at the country club, as we called it! She loved having her own little cottage with family around her constantly. She attended the grandchildren’s sporting events, countless parties and traveled with the family. She loved watching the Warriors and Giants games and nicknaming her favorite players. We all had to stay current on the sports teams as she would love to talk about the games.
If you asked her the secret to longevity, she would respond, “Have a positive attitude, exercise, eat well and enjoy each day.” And that is exactly what she did.
Our mom was truly the BEST! She will be so dearly missed by her family.
Marie is survived by, Bernie (David) Edrosolan of Napa, Rod (Jocelyn) Stone of Napa, Mike (Cathy) Stone of Novato and George Jr. of Napa; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Please join the family for a celebration of Marie’s life from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Bernie and David’s home in Napa. A Mass in Marie’s honor will be held at 1 p.m. at St. Apollinaris Catholic Church, followed by burial at Tulocay Cemetery in Napa.
Donations in Marie’s name may be made to your favorite charity or to Hospice by the Bay.
Aged 102 3/4 years.
