Obituary
Laura Jane Buckles was born in Hansonville, Russell county, Va., June 6, 1849, and departed this life March 26, 1930, at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 20 days.On December 5, 1866, Miss Buckles became the bride of Mr. George T. Jessee. To this union nine children were born, seven of whom are still living. Sophia died at the age of 2 1/2 years and Mrs. John Hern passed away at the age of 32 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Jessee united with the Baptist church in Virginia. After coming to Kansas in 1870 they joined the Christian church in Vermillion. Mrs. Jessee's membership has remained in that church ever since.
In 1902 the family moved to a farm just west of town, and in 1912 moved up to the present home in Centralia. This happy retirement was broken by the death of the husband in 1915.

Through all the years, nearly 81 years, Mrs. Jessee has had a bright, cheerful disposition, looking at the pleasant things of life and the worth while, abiding things. Her cheery spirit was marred only after a stroke and an operation about two years ago. Since then she has often expressed her desire for death and the future abode.

A long and useful life has been hers. She has witnessed many marked changes in this state, also changes in the standards of living. Hers was a great adventure in life. The natural affections of motherhood and a deep concern for all her children, best reveal the true worth of this life.

Mrs. Jessee is survived by two brothers, Mr. Emmett Buckles, Hansonville, Va., William Buckles, Muscotah, Kansas, and her seven children, Floyd Jessee, Glencoe, Okla.; Mrs. Octavia Shaefer, Centralia; Mrs. Emma Hilt, Reserve; Mrs. Georgia Shaffer, Vermillion; Mrs. Eunice Knight, Hollywood, Calif.; Mrs. Mattie Birchfield, Los Angeles, Calif.; Byron Jessee, Santa Ana, Calif.; also many other relatives and friends.

The funeral was held at the M.E. church last Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. L.C. Campbell. A quartette, H.F. Hightower, Mrs. John King, Mrs. Hamer Barrett and L.D. Richardson sang. The pall bearers were old neighbors and friends of the family, Oscar Newman, Will Flentie, Leonard Shaefer, Wm. Ward, Robert Armstrong and Louis Armstrong. Burial in the Centralia cemetery.

Card Of Thanks
We wish to express out sincere thanks to the many neighbors and friends for their kindness and sympathy during the sickness and at the time of death of our mother. Also for the beautiful flowers, those who sang, and to the minister for his kind words, and to all who helped in any way we extend our heartfelt thanks.
