Robert Francis Hardgrave was the last born to James Hardgrave and his wife, Almira Dyer. Born in Williamson, Tennessee, near the Big Harpeth River, he and his family relocated to Johnson County, Arkansas in 1836. Around 1841 he married Nancy Bowen Ward, and they had one child, a son James Dyer Hardgrave. When the Mexican War broke out, he and many others volunteered for service, in the Arkansas Regiment of Mounted Volunteers, Company C, commanded by George W. Patrick. In mid-July, with wagons and horses, they set out for San Antonio, Texas, for organizing and training. It was reported that Robert Hardgrave died on July 27, 1846, well before the famous Battle of Buena Vista. In reading further, it was discovered that while in San Antonio, dysentery and fever were rampant, and many soldiers fell ill and died. I am quite convinced this is what happened to Robert, but no other record has surfaced. He apparently was buried where he died, as no record has been found in the family cemetery in Johnson County, Arkansas.
