Thomas Lindsey Burton, 82, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 22, 2006. He was born Feb. 11, 1924, RFD Reidsville, the son of the late William Sid and Margaret Waynick Burton. Mr. Burton finished high school in Reidsville and worked several months at Glen L. Martin Aircraft Co. in Baltimore, Md., before entering military service during World War II. Mr. Burton was an infantry soldier in the European Theater, entering combat on the 10th wave of the Allied invasion of France at Normandy Beach. Burton fought in all five campaigns of the European Theater, was wounded in action three times and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for valor. Upon completing service in Europe in September 1945, he returned to the United States and attended Elon University, where he graduated in 1949 with a degree in business administration. In September 1949, he was employed as an auditor with the N.C. Department of Revenue. Mr. Burton retired as District Supervisor with the N.C. Department of Revenue on Jan. 1, 1986. Mr. Burton maintained a private pilot's license for 40 years. He was Past Master of Salem Masonic Lodge No. 289. Also, he was an active member of Burkhead United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Neal of Reidsville and Lucille Taylor of Waynesboro, Pa.; and a brother, William Sidney Burton, of Sanford. He is survived by Jo Ann Pegg Burton of the home; daughter Joan Maluf and husband Jason of Hilliard, Ohio; son Brad Lindsey Burton and wife Diane Stepp Burton, along with their children Russell and Kaitlyn of Mills River. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 26, at Burkhead United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 this evening Sunday, June 25, at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home on Reynolda Road. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Burkhead United Methodist Church, 5250 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106, or The Oxford Orphanage, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565.
