Melissa "Lissa" Marie (Taglieri) Fugate, 88, passed away Monday at Regency of Albany.

Lissa was born to Theodore and Satero Savine Salsedo in Portland. Her mother died in May 1920.

On March 27, 1926, she was adopted by George and Lela Thompson Taglieri of Portland. Lissa was raised in Portland and attended Catholic school until high school, where she attended Lincoln High School. Lissa always treasured her happy memories of her childhood summers spent at her family's cottage in Seaside. She lost her mother early in her life and her father at the age of 21.

Lissa met her future husband while working at the Red Cross in Portland. She married Arden "Don" Donald Fugate, on Sept. 7, 1946, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Portland.

After living in various locations while Don served in the Navy, they lived in school housing in Corvallis while Don attended Oregon State University. They settled in Albany, where they raised their three children.

Lissa's most rewarding occupation in her life was making a home for her family. Her daughter has many memories of her mother's many passions: The beautiful row of roses in the side yard; parrot tulips around the oak tree; columbine and sweet Williams in the back flower bed; a lilac bush by the clothes line; and the Daphne bush by the front porch. These memories have made these flowers favorites for a lifetime.

There wasn't anything she couldn't sew or knit, including dresses for her only daughter; doll clothes sewn and knitted for Barbie, which have endured a daughter and granddaughter and await another generation; and Argyle socks for her husband and sons. Her family enjoyed the wonderful home preserved fruits, vegetable and jams of the summer seasons year after year, including canned cherries, raspberries, apricots and jams to go with the wonderful homemade breads she baked. Mom's spaghetti sauce, potato salad, and holiday fruit salad were special and treasured forever.

Living down by the Willamette River, summer afternoons were spent swimming and catching tadpoles in the creek while she watched over her kids and bathed in the sun.

She had many crafts she enjoyed through her life. In her later years, she spent hours doing ceramics. She has more than 100 ceramic Christmas village houses.

"Having struggled with the effects of dementia, it was a long overdue blessing that mom's wishes and our prayers were answered. May she be at peace and with the many loved ones that have passed."

She is survived by son and wife David and Kathy Govro Fugate of Lebanon; daughter Mignon Brown of Albany; former son-in-law Merle Brown of Kodiak, Alaska; granddaughters Heather Blankney of Tampa, Fla., and Robin Brown of Haiku, Maui, Hawaii; grandsons Tad Brown of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Darwin Fugate of Willow, Alaska; great-granddaughter Dawn Riley Fugate of Willow; and sister-in-law Jean Moore Lewis of Klamath Falls and her children, Bob and Gerald Moore and Shirley Beasley of Klamath Falls and Beverly Ricks of Salmon, Idaho.

Lissa was preceded in death by husband Don in 1987 and son Pat in 2005.

A family graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens.
