Isaac Johns was born on January 10, 1854 in Onondaga County, New York, to William and Sally Johns. The family moved to Michigan when Isaac was a young boy.

Isaac moved to Hanover when he was a young man, where he met Jennie Fisher. They married on December 2, 1877. They had one son, Myron, and two daughters, Amy and Nina. Myron died at a young age of a broken neck.

Isaac was known for his "genial, kindly way" and "pleasant word and smile." He was always ready to lend a helping hand whenever needed, and he was "endeared to the hearts of all."

He passed away on June 5, 1931 at the age of 77.
