Mr. Jackson married Marie Willard in 1855. They had one son, William W. Jackson born 1860, who also became an attorney.
In 1870, Mr. Jackson was elected Wood Co., WV's prosecuting attorney where he served until January 1, 1877. Beginning in 1874, he served two years for the State Legislature. Concurrently, he was elected to the House of Delegates in 1875 where he served one term. In 1879, he was elected Mayor of the City of Parkersburg.
Mr. Jackson was elected Governor of West Virginia in 1880 by what he called the "intelligent majority." He is best remembered for his tax reform attempts. After his term, in 1885, he returned to private practice in Parkersburg.
At the time of his death, he was President of Citizens National Bank.
