US Congressman. He graduated from the West Texas Military Academy in San Antonio in 1910. The Canadian Royal Mounted Police offered him a job as a lieutenant, but he instead joined the Texas Rangers, where he served with Company C until 1912, under Capt. J. M. Fox. He was admitted to the bar in 1915 after studying law under Judge James A. King. In 1917, West established a law practice in Brownsville, Texas, and was elected district attorney from 1922 to 1925, as well as assistant district attorney from 1927 to 1930. He was elected as a Democrat to the Texas House of Representatives in 1930 and served until 1933. West became a U.S. Representative when he was elected in 1933 to replace John Nance Garner. He was reelected to each term and served until his death in 1948.
