Published in the Messenger-Inquirer (Owensboro, Kentucky), Thurs., 18 Dec 1947 - GRAVES COUNTY FARMER BEATS WIFE, KILLS SELF - Mayfield, Ky. - A 68-year-old farmer went berserk yesterday, Sheriff Jesse Legate reported, and thrashed his wife with a fire poker, fired their home and then hanged himself.
Sheriff Legate identified the farmer as James Taylor of near Mayfield.
Mrs. Taylor, reported in serious condition at a Mayfield hospital, was quoted by the sheriff as saying her husband attacked her with the poker as she prepared the family breakfast.
Mrs. Taylor fled to a neighbor's home, the sheriff related.
Persons attracted to the burning house found Taylor's body hanging by a plowline from a tree in a nearby woods.
Coroner Coy Drew ruled that Taylor committed suicide.
