Emory Lee Hughes, Jr. was the son of Emory and Frances Hughes. He had four brothers, Johnny, Donald, Raymond and Preston, and three sisters, Barbara, Mary and Joann.
Like his brothers, E.L. worked in construction, primarily aluminum siding and roofing.
With his first wife Elizabeth, E.L. had five children: Eddie, Elaine, Betty Ann, Dana and David Michael. When he divorced Elizabeth, he brought the three young girls to live with his new wife Hazel and her three teenage daughters, Darlene, Dale and Joy. He was married to Hazel from 1966 until her death in 1996. The following year, he married Christine who was Hazel’s former sister-in-law (sister to her first husband Dowl). E.L. died in 1999, two years after marrying Christine.
