Audra Marie Jewell Compton White, age 89, formerly of Richlands, VA died Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Heritage Hall in Tazewell, VA. Born August 31, 1927 in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late William “Bill” Jewell and Ethel Ward Jewell of Pilgrims Knob, VA.
Audra was a graduate of Whitewood High School where she was a member of the girls’ basketball team. She enjoyed painting, crafts, crocheting, quilting, sewing, singing and learning to play the banjo and guitar. She was employed for many years by the Buchanan County Public Schools as a teacher aide at Whitewood Elementary. After moving to Richlands in the 1970s, she worked at the Piggly Wiggly store and Deskins store until her retirement in 1992. Audra was a member of the Westside Holiness Church in Raven, VA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Compton; a daughter, Evelyn Dianna Compton; and an infant son, William Robert Compton; two brothers, Randell Jewell and Herbert Jewell; and a sister, Mary Helen Jewell.
Audra was a loving mother to her children who loved her dearly and will cherish her memory.
She is survived by three daughters: Carol Cole and husband, Larry of Wardell; Barbara Blankenship and husband, Phillip of Cedar Bluff; and Patricia “Patty” Compton of Bluefield and fiancé, Tony Morris; three grandchildren: Dawn VanDyke of Wardell; Stephanie McReynolds and husband, Shawn of Tazewell; and John Blankenship of Richlands; two great-grandchildren: Mason VanDyke and Annie McReynolds; and a sister, Lanthia Ross of Fort Riley, KS; also, several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands on Monday, July 24, 2017 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. The funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Jeff Kinder officiating. Burial to follow in the Ward Cemetery at Pilgrims Knob, VA. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
