D. W. Hoag dies at Vernon home
Vernon – Residents of this village were shocked to learn of the death of Duane W. Hoag, which occurred at his home on South Sconondoa St., Monday afternoon.
A native of Rome, he was born on April 24, 1880, the son of William Y and Anna Vanderwarker Hoag. He attended the local school and also Business College. By occupation he was a farmer, operating a place for many years on Cooper Street.
He was twice married. His first wife was Elizabeth Maxwell, who died in 1943. On March 7, 1948 at Hamilton, he married Mrs. Etta Van Hyning.
Mt. Hoag had been employed the past none years by the State Highway Dept., and was planning to retire April 1.
He was affiliated with the Baptist Church and with Sconondoa Lodge, F&AM., whose members will meet at the Masonic Temple Wednesday night at 7:30 to go to the home to pay their respects to a brother.
Surviving besides his wife is one son, Yates M. Hoag, Utica; also two half-sisters, Mrs. Lydia Byers and Mrs. Cora Arnold, both of Canandaigua; five step-children, Miss Lorraine Van Hyning, Oriskany Falls; Edger Van Hyning, Weston's Milles; Mrs. Andrew Hengst, Hamilton; Mrs. Edgar Debisschop, Rochester; Raymond Van Hyning, Massena, and ten step-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at his home on Thursday at 2 p.m. Friends are invited and may call on Wednesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, with arrangements in charge of H. R. Alger.
