Charlie Spears Dead
SUMTER, S.C.—(ANP)—Charlie (Charles) Spears, Jr., widely known newspaper man and artist, died Monday at his home here in Sumter, the victim of an auto accident. Mr. Spears, who was a staff member of the Associated Negro Press, was one of the most popular and widely read columnists and feature story writers in the race. His columns, which ranged from humor to pathos, anecdote and philosophy to legal hints clothed in lay language, were exceedingly popular.
A veteran of the World War, widely traveled, Charles Spears was educated in Boston. He attained wide distinction as an artist but painted as the spirit moved him, since be was financially independent.
He followed all of the bents which amused him, photography being another hobby in which he was most proficient.
He leaves a daughter and his widow, Mrs. Eva Jessye Spears, the famed choir leader. Mrs. Spears had left Sumter for a tour of Canada and the middle west with her singers when the accident occurred.
