Bettie Jo Compton, age 89, of Somerset, KY, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

Bettie Jo was born on August 18, 1927 in Somerset, KY to the late Cecil Godby and Audrey Burchett Godby. Bettie spent her life reaching out to others and making them feel special. In the early years, she assisted customers at the family grocery store, Cecil’s Market. You could find her selling tickets at local movie theaters, and the Greyhound bus station. She served as a waitress at various restaurants, provided customer service at cable companies, and was best known as a sale associate at J.C. Penney’s for twenty-two years.

Bettie always let everyone know that Jesus was her Savior, and shared how He could become their Savior as well. Later in life, Bettie became known as a “prayer warrior.” She would spend intentional time each day in her recliner praying for the needs of others. Everyone that came into contact with Bettie left feeling loved. She is survived by two sons, David Compton of Somerset and Danny Compton of Somerset; two daughters, Jolyn (and Mike) Honeycutt of Somerset and Kimm (and Steve) Merrick of Somerset; one brother, James (and Faye) Godby of Independence, KY; ten grandchildren, Ryan Compton, Jamie Whitaker, Neil Compton, Evan Compton, Emily Compton, Andrea Lawler, John Honeycutt, Amy Tilley, Stephanie Roberts and Cameron Merrick; fourteen great grandchildren, Peyton Putteet, Kyndal Putteet, McKinley Compton, Landyn Compton, Jaxon Whitaker, Kaitlyn Whitaker, Maddox Lawler, Ivy Lawler, Keeley Lawler, Phoenix Lawler, Novalyn Lawler, Reagan Tilley, Andrew Tilley and August Roberts; her best friend, Velda Acton of Somerset; and special friends at Blown Away Hair Salon.

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her former husband, Leonard Compton; two sisters, Jane (and Eldon) Yahnig and Jean (and Kenneth) Chestnut; and best friend, Carol Langdon.

Visitation will be on Friday July 28, 2017 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home. A second visitation will be held on Saturday July 29, 2017 from 12:00pm to 1:00pm at Oakhill Baptist Church.

The celebration of Bettie’s life will be held on Saturday July 29, 2017 at 1:00pm at Oakhill Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Phelps and Dr. Harold Brown officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. (Husband is at White Oak Cemetery).
