Betty Jo Haynie Gaskin, 87 (although she professed to be 82), Rainbow City, joined our Heavenly Father and our father (John Elbert Gaskin, husband of 69 years) in Heaven on Monday, July 24, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents, Newton Wheeler and Ola Mae (Cothran) Haynie; great grandson, Joshua Reid Gaskin; (Sisters) Oceal Haynie Burns, Lenisha Haynie Barnes, Glenola Haynie Reddish; (Brothers) Edsel Ford Haynie and Haskell Haynie. She is survived by her brother, Franklin D. Haynie, and sister-in-law, Lucille Richards Gaskin.
"Maw Maw Gaskin" was known for the love of life that she shared with her four children: Don Gaskin (Lynn), Steve Gaskin (Pam), Nita Gaskin Stone (Robin), Lana Gaskin Bellew (She asked that I keep this space empty). Later, that love was exceeded when she became a "Maw Maw" to 10 grandchildren: Ashleigh Gaskin Langdale (Chad), Randi Gaskin Wright (Mark), Joshua Cain Gaskin (Nicki), Matt Gaskin (Ashley), Mandi Gaskin Roberts (Mead), Holli Miller McLeod (Brandon Sivley), Casey Miller (Stormie), Peyton McKinley Bellew (Brandon Kirkland), Barclay Paige Bellew and John Reese Bellew; 20 great grandchildren: Grayson Mead Davis, Beckham Hammontree, Addi Kate Hammontree, Johnny Maddox Gaskin Pruett, Bellah McCurry, Allie McCurry, Dirk Wright, Max Wright, Mary Sade Wright, Cain Gaskin, Gunnar Gaskin, Owen Pace Gaskin, Bailee Martin, Jackson Mead Roberts, Carter Roberts, Porter Gaskin, Shepherd Gaskin, Miller and Riggs McLeod and Charlee Miller, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Betty (known as "Maw Maw" to most who knew her) was born on May 15, 1930, and attended Etowah High School. She was a member of Whitesboro Baptist Church (65 years) and was truly a Proverbs 31 Woman, "Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord should be praised." Betty's happiest days were spent watching her grandsons play ball, fishing on Don's pier and worshiping her Savior alongside our dad. She was a connoisseur of Southern cooking, evaluator of funeral services of those who went before her, collector of receipts and holder of tissues. Mom was faithful to her church, Friday hair appointment, family and friends. We attribute our strong work ethic and charitable spirit to Betty (and John E. Gaskin), who were the owners of Gaskin Tire Service and a Farm Bureau/ALFA agent for many years, and she was very active in her church and community. She will be remembered by her love of God, family, white hair, fashion, pink lipstick, Braves Baseball and Auburn Football.
We would like to give a special thanks to her caregivers, Atha Talton, Kim Woods, Steve Gaskin and Lynn Gaskin for their support and love over the past two years, and to her special friend, Christie West.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Collier Butler Funeral Home. The body will lie in repose from 2 to 3 p.m. at Whitesboro Baptist Church before the 3 p.m. funeral service. There will be in a graveside service at Whitesboro Baptist Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons.
