He was the son of William Baker Beeson and Mary Ann Frances Sibert Beeson.

In 1886, John established the Arcadia Female College in Arcadia, La. Later, he was the president of the Meridian Female College in Meridian, Miss. and Marengo Female College in Alabama.

In December 1988, board of trustees of Birmingham, Ala.'s Samford University voted to name their new divinity school the Beeson School of Divinity in honor of Ralph Waldo Beeson and his late father, John Wesley Beeson.

Ralph Beeson provided the largest gift from a living individual in Samford history to establish the first divinity school at a Baptist college or university in the nation. Beeson Divinity School is open to persons from all Christian denominations.

John's first wife was Annie Foster Beeson, who died in West Point, Miss. in 1892. His second wife was Rosa Laura Foster Beeson, whom he married in 1893 in Marengo, Ala.
