April 14th of 1863, he enlisted in the Louisiana 31st Infantry, Company K in Monroe, LA at age 27. He lost hearing in his left ear when a cannon ball exploded near him during the Siege of Vicksburg. Pension application of his wife, Mary Catherine Sims states he was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Calhoun.

He had gray eyes, auburn hair, and a dark complexion and was 6'3" tall.

He died on November 27, 1906, in Calhoun, Louisiana, at the age of 72.
