Obituary:
(1895) Samuel Saylor was born in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, Dec. 15, 1823, and died at his home in Rockwell, Iowa, Dec 23 1895. His early life was spent in his native state. He was united in marriage with Sarah Dull, Jan. 9, 1848, with whom he journeyed over life’s pathway for nearly fifty years. Nine children were born to them, three dying in infancy; the others still survive him and were with him at the time of his death.
In the autumn of 1860 Mr. Saylor moved to Iowa, settling in Waterloo. He being one of the pioneers of that town. In 1871 he moved to a farm in Bremer county, where he lived until 1893. He then came to Rockwell where he has since resided.
He died from the effects of a cancer on the face, consequently his last sickness was lingering and very painful. But without complaint he calmly awaited the end. His will was the will of God so he could not murmur. Those who knew him best loved him most. He was a true friend, a kind neighbor and a kind and indulgent husband and father. He left his children what is better than riches, an example of a true Christian character. He was born into the Dunkard church and remained a member of the same until last fall, when he united with the M. E. church at Rockwell.
The funeral services were conducted in the M. E. church by the pastor, Rev. F. G. Young, assisted by Rev. Yonker, of the Congregational church. The music was furnished by Misses Bowles and Wheeler and Messrs. Bruce and Miller, with Miss Maude Harris at the organ. The sermon was from I John 2:17. Though the funeral was on Christmas day a large number were in attendance. Bearers of his own selection bore the remains to its last resting place in Rockwell cemetery. He is at rest but his patient spirit and noble life lives on to bless all who knew him.
