Earl was the son of Milo and Ferol Mitchell Zimmerman. He was a veteran. He was an electrical lineman for Indianapolis Power and Light (IPL) Company in Indianapolis. His wife was Maxine Zimmerman. Earl was electrocuted while working on a transformer and died as a result. Earl became a foster child shortly after his mother's death at about ten years of age. He and his brother Wayne lived with a foster family in Indianapolis. Earl had seven siblings. They were LT. Col. John Martin Zimmerman, Velma Jane Zimmerman Holley, Robert Mitchell Zimmerman, Charles Wayne Zimmerman, Betty Jean Zimmerman Burch, Doris Loretta Zimmerman Peacock, and Richard Paul Zimmerman.
