Katerina was born in Bohemia, the westernmost and largest historical region of the Czech Republic. In search of a better life, she migrated to Russia. In 1886, having been widowed, she accompanied her daughter, Anna and family to Canada, where they settled in Eserhazy, Saskatchewan.

Katerina applied for her homestead here. When her daughter Anna died in 1894, she was buried on the NE corner of Katerina's homestead, which Katerina later donated to be used as Kolin cemetery.

Anna had two other daughters, Elizabeth and Emilia.
