Clell Leonard Holmes danced his last waltz on Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

Clell was born in Spokane, Washington on January 21, 1925 to Clell, Sr. & Fern Holmes. As a child, he moved with his family to Yakima where he attended McKinley Elementary, Franklin Junior High, and graduated from Yakima High School in 1943. While in school, Clell was an avid athlete and was proud of his accomplishments in both track and boxing. Directly following graduation, Clell joined the Coast Guard where he served as a baker and was stationed at U.S. Coast Guard Station Ketchikan (Alaska) where he served under Commander Charles Nerup. It was here, that Clell met his future wife (Commander Nerup’s daughter) Fanny.

Following his service in the Coast Guard, Clell married Fanny and they ran a small bakery and sandwich counter in Ketchikan. A few years later, the couple moved back to Clell’s childhood home town where they started a family, later purchasing the house where Clell would live for 60 years.

Clell loved being surrounded by people and put his social talents to good use as he pursued a career in sales, later moving into real estate where he retired after several years as owner/broker of Westside Realty. In his life outside of work, Clell and Fanny danced their way through six decades of marriage and could often be found at the VFW or Legion surrounded by friends. Clell loved to play golf and after retirement played daily with friends at Westwood Golf Course. He loved to decorate the house for Christmas, it glowed with thousands of lights and Santa with his reindeer topping it off. And of course everyone loved to stop by during the Holidays for one of his famous Tom & Jerry’s.

Clell’s two children also remained close to home and soon the house was full of grandchildren. The entire clan could often be found piling into the motor home with Clell at the wheel, driving off for weekends of hiking, campfires, and lots of laughter… and fishing… always fishing. Clell may hold the record for number of fish caught in a lifetime.

Clell never stood still. He built things, went places, caught fish, danced with his sweetheart, and talked the ears off of everyone he met. He loved his family and his friends, and we will miss him.

Clell is preceded in death by his wife Fanny, his parents Clell and Fern, his two siblings Colleen Byam and William (Bill) Holmes. He is survived by his children Ron (wife Gail) Holmes & Gail (husband Dick) Brown; grandchildren Jason Holmes, Janette Smith, Sarah Clinton, Michael Andrews, Michelle & Angela Brown; and great-grandchildren Katie Holmes, Aiden and Alex Smith, Lucy and James Clinton.

There will be a Memorial Celebration at the Yakima VFW, 118 S. 5th Ave., Sunday August 6, 2017 at 1:00 p.m.
