Andrew Hoban, 23, worked at Quidnessett Country Club for the last eight or nine years in a variety of roles: running the bag room, caddying, and working in the pro shop.
Brian Thimme, general manager of theNorth Kingstown private club, said Hoban was popular with the members. "He was a big spirit around here. He was always positive. He was always very involved with our membership. Our members loved him, and right now, they're devastated," Thimme said.
Thimme described Hoban as a gifted golfer.
"He was an excellent golfer. He could have been a golf pro. He had thought about it. The last couple of years, he really picked up the game," he said. Hoban, who graduated from the University of Rhode Island last year, was "a pretty good basketball player, too," he said.
Thimme said Hoban went to The Station Thursday with a friend. His friend, whom Thimme said he could not identify, was in stable condition at a hospital, he said.
"He's got a great family. They're wonderful people," Thimme said.
