James J. Lane was the son of William Lane and Nancy Potts-Lane.

James married Mary Frances Smith on Feb 19, 1865.

James J. Lane enlisted in Co. G, 33rd Regiment of Missouri Infantry, Aug. 18, 1862 and was discharged as Corporal, May 12, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.
His death was caused by cirrhosis of the liver from which he suffered from for 3 years before his death.

He suffered a gunshot flesh wound on June 6, 1864 at the battle of Lake Chicot, Arkansas. He lost the middle finger of his right hand at the battle of Nashville, Tennessee Dec. 15, 1864.

He is listed on the Missouri State Militia 6th Cavalry Co. D Post Civil War Enrollment list. The following physical description is given, age 20, 5'9", light hair, black eyes, fair completion, married, farmer, Davis Township.
