NORFOLK — Gordon M. Baumann Sr., 92, of Norfolk died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017, at Heritage of Bel Air in Norfolk.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Norfolk. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Military honors by the Nebraska National Guard Honor Guard, American Legion Post 16, VFW Post 1644 and the American Legion Riders. Home for Funerals in Norfolk is in charge of the arrangements.

Gordon was born Aug. 17, 1924, in Norfolk, the son of Adam and Minnie (Fuhrman) Baumann. He was baptized on Sept. 7, 1924, at Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk and confirmed on June 5, 1938, at Grace Lutheran Church in Norfolk. Gordon graduated from Norfolk High School in May 1942 and began work at Western Union.

He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force on Nov. 2, 1942, serving only in the United States, and was discharged March 1, 1946. He went to Norfolk Junior College in the fall of 1946 and in 1947 started working as an accountant for Elkhorn Construction Company.

Gordon married Althea A. Jurgens on June 15, 1947, at Grace Lutheran Church by the Rev. Walter Rehwardt. On May 1, 1948, he started working for Norfolk Auto Supply Inc., working there for 30 years as secretary-treasurer. He then worked at Century 21 Fisher Realty for 10 years as an office manager–accountant. In 1986, he retired.


He became a member of Grace Lutheran Church at the age of 6. He became a voting member at the age of 24 and then he was voted in a as treasurer for five years. Also, he held other church positions such as financial secretary, trustee, and Sunday School Superintendent. Gordon was a member of the Lutheran Laymen’s League.

Gordon is survived by his children and their spouses, Jay and Donna Baumann, Terry and Cheryl Baumann, Gordon Jr. and Linda Baumann, all of Norfolk, Michael and Kim Baumann of Pierce, John and Lisa Baumann of Tulsa, Okla., and Julie and John Olsufka of Grand Island; 22 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Althea; his parents; a sister, Delores Baumann; and a brother, Jay Baumann, who was killed in action on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, 1944, in Germany.
