Charlie was born October 21, 1921 in Mayhill, New Mexico the son of Allen H. Clayton and Onie Scott Clayton.

He attended Mayhill grade school through all eight years and then graduated in 1940 from Cloudcroft High School. He then attended college for one year in Las Cruces before being called to the military. He served his country in the United States Air Force during World War II. In the Air Force Charlie worked as an airplane mechanic and was discharged after 3 years, 4 months, and 21 days.

On March 6, 1948 he was married to Allene Morgan in Alamogordo, N. M. They moved to Artesia in 1958 from Mayhill.

He worked for the US Forest Service while living in Mayhill as a fire fighter and a maintenance man. While living in Artesia he owned and operated a service station. He also loved gardening and yard working.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law Bill Jackson, nephew Tommy Leon Sampson, brother Delbert Clayton and brother-in-law Jay Adkisson.

Survivors include his wife Allene Clayton of the family home, daughters Marsha McArthur and husband Guy of Artesia, and Rita Kay Jackson of Lovington, N.M. Grandchildren Donna Porter and husband Kurt of Lovington, Sandy Jackson of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Tim McArthur of Boulder, Colorado. Great grandsons Cody and Cole Porter, sister Floye Adkisson of Tularosa, N.M , nieces Erva Jo Yarbrough of Tularosa, N. M. and Shari Adkisson of Albuquerque, N.M.
