She was a graduate of West Point and continued her education by completing training for administrative services. As a young woman, she supported the war efforts by providing secretarial services to the Department of Defense in Washington, DC. She also completed specialized training in dressmaking to become an accomplished seamstress. In later years, she worked in retail sales in Indianapolis, Marion County, IN where she lived for over 50 years.
On January 23, 1948, she married Russell Lowell Johnson, the son of Matthew Theopolis "Matt" Johnson and Millie Welch Johnson, who was also a native of Kemper County, MS. Three children, two daughters and one son, were born to their union.
She was an active member of Kemper County TRIAD, working to address crime issues which affected older citizens. She was a faithful member of St. Mark United Methodist Church in DeKalb, MS, where she served in the choir, Sunday School, and Communion Stewardess.
She will long be remembered as a caregiver, a good woman with a big heart and a fast car. She loved good food, enjoyed socializing with family and friends, sharing the bounty of her garden, and attending revivals.
She died August 5, 2017 at the age of 92.
