Michael was joined in marriage in the Baptist Church of Alta Vista, Kansas.

He was drafted into the Army in February 1969 and he served his country well. He attended basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, advanced training at Ft. After a 30 day leave, he went to the Vietnam War, where he received two Bronze Stars while with Company A, 1st Battalion, 52nd Infantry of the Americal Division's 198th Infantry Brigade. He spent from January to December 1970 in the Vietnam conflict before arriving back to the USA on the Freedom Bird.

After military service, Mike went back to being a route salesman for Royal Crown Cola out of Chapman, then in 1971 went to Pepsi Cola out of Junction City. He transferred to Emporia Pepsi Cola in September 1973, working for the next 8 years before becoming a route salesman for Rainbo Bread in 1980, where he worked for 25 years before retiring in 2005.

Michael took up woodturning, long overdue vacations, gardening, yard work, enjoyed cooking and baking, plus spending time with his granddaughters and great granddaughter. He enjoyed attending school functions for his grandchildren.
