Jean married David Pickhinke at Remsen St. Mary’s Catholic Church on September 1, 1962. They met in the summer of 1960 on a blind date (arranged by Jean’s sister) at a wedding dance at Remsen’s Avalon Ballroom; when Jean went to school in Des Moines, David continued to visit. After their marriage, Jean and David honeymooned at the World’s Fair in Seattle.

Following RSM graduation, Jean lived in Des Moines for a year and a half. She attended nursing school at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines and earned her LPN. Following her marriage, she settled with David on a farm near Early, IA. Jean briefly commuted to hospital nursing jobs in Sac City and Storm Lake, but eventually decided that farming was a lot more productive. Jean and David farmed and had a grain and hog operation near Early from 1963 until 2003. After their retirement they moved into Storm Lake.

Jean volunteered at the hospital coffee shop, worked funeral dinners, and attended grandchildren’s activities. Her hobbies used to include golf, playing cards, and pulling antique John Deere tractors.

Jean and David also used to travel a lot. They flew over the ocean 5 times, and their sightseeing included Hawaii; China; the Holy Land; Greece; and Oberammergau, Germany.

Jean summed up her life by saying that she had a lot of blessings and a few pitfalls, but she would make the same choices again.
