Margaret's maternal grandparents were John Connor and Jane/Jennie (Selfridge) Connor. After John Connor died in Scotland, Jennie took her younger children to America. Some of her older sons were already in the U.S. and she settled in Xenia, Ohio with her son Henry Connor and his family.
Grandma Jennie Connor became ill and her daughter Margaret (this Margaret's mother) left Greenock to be with her and took her eldest child, James Berryman. While Margaret was tending to her mother Jennie, this Margaret Berryman was born. After grandma Jennie Connor passed away in 1868 (she is buried in Xenia) Margaret Berryman returned to Greenock with baby Margaret, but son James stayed in Xenia with his uncle Henry and attended school there until Henry died in 1875. James returned to his family in Scotland.
