Irving Vance Henderer was born on February 23, 1894 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, the son of Irving Curtis Henderer (1863-1935) and Susan Almira "Susie" (Corbitt) Henderer (1873–1959).

He enlisted in the US Army in August 1917 and served in the 12th Antiaircraft Battery, Coast Artillery Corps. Attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, he was honorably discharged in February 1919.

Irving was married to Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" Wefel (1904-1951) on November 23, 1926 in Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama, and she was the daughter of Herman Henry Wefel (1867–1933) and Mary (Nieman) Wefel (1873–1914).

A civil engineer for Nashville Bridge Company and living at 2608 Sunset Place, Nashville, he was 63 years old and a widower when he died of pneumonia at home on December 16, 1957. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
