James E. Higgins, superintendent of mails in the Wichita Post Office for the past year, died suddenly at his home, 503 North Washington avenue, Sunday morning. Mr. Higgins was 56 years old and had been sick since November 3 with nervous neuralgia.
He had been a resident of Wichita 33 years, coming here from St. Pauls, Kansas, to become chief commissary of the Frisco railroad. He was born in Claremorris, Ireland, and came to the U.S. in 1858 with his parents, who settled in Lebanon, Kentucky. He attended the famous Trappist University at Bardstown, Kentucky, coming to Kansas after his graduation. The Higgins located at the old Osage Mission, now St. Pauls.
Young Higgins taught school in the Jesuit college at St. Pauls for several years. He was married in January, 1883 to Miss Minnie St. Dennis. In February, 1885, the deceased entered the employment of the government as a postal clerk under Postmaster M.M. Murdock.
Mr. Higgins had been continuously employed at the local post office except for one year's service as a railway mail clerk on the Rock Island. One year ago he was promoted to become superintendent of mails under Postmaster W.C. Edwards, retaining the position under Captain Shields, the present Postmaster.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. B. Murray; his widow and four children; Rue, Morris, George and Terrence Higgins.
The deceased was a prominent member of the AWUW and Knights of Columbus. He held the rank of past Grand Knight in the K. of C.
Funeral services will be held this morning from St. Mary's Cathedral, interment in Calvary Cemetery.
