The fourth of five children. Youngest siblings, Victor and Elsie, died in infancy in 1884 in the Wichita, Kansas, area. Parents Nicholas and Pauline then moved to Ness City, west-central Kansas, where William's older sister Mable was born in 1886. Two years later, William also was born in Ness City. The family eventually moved to Atlanta, south-central Kansas, where sister Cleo was born in 1895. The final move was back to Wichita, Kansas, in 1905. As of 1910, 21 year old William was working in Wichita as a street railway conductor. As of 1917 when he registered for the WWI draft, he was working in Mulvane, Kansas, for Davidson & Case Lumber Company as a "lumberman." He eventually held positions of bookkeeper and then Assistant Manager during his career with the same company in Wichita. Married in 1915 and with wife Ellen raised three children.

William C. Klaus, 78, of 124 N. Belmon, a retired office clerk for Davidson & Case Lumber Co., died Thursday.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. A Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lahey's Crest Hill Mortuary. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
He was born in Ness City, Kan., and came here as a child. He worked at the lumber company 40 years.
Survivors include his widow, Ellen; two sons, Paul J., Rochester, N.Y., and E. Romuald, Billings, Mont.; a daughter, Mrs. Kathleen Tucker, Wichita, and a sister, Mrs. Byron E. Babb, Wichita.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.
