Joseph Pickney Lawson was the son of Willis & Elizabeth Britt Lawson of Robeson County, North Carolina. He was the grandson of Abraham & Mary Lawson. His siblings were: Temperance, Elias L., Edmund B., Obedience, Betsy, Emmeline, Henriette, Dolly, & Emma. C. Lawson. Joseph Pinkney Lawson answered the call of duty and enlisted in the 7th Battalion North Carolina Junior Reserves, Company C, "The Cumberland Plowboys" on November 22, 1864. As North Carolina became a more active battleground in the final months of the war, the Junior Reserves saw combat. They helped defend Fort Fisher, near Wilmington, on December 25, 1864, and fought in the battles of Kinston, or Wyse Fork (March 8–10, 1865), and Bentonville (March 18–21, 1865). Joseph Pickney Lawson would marry Miss Elizabeth Betsy Turner of Duplin County, North Carolina in 1863. Eight children are believed to have come from this union. They were: Lavina (Strickland), Mollie Missouri (Strickland), William Andrew, John, Hezekiah D., Gussie Ella (Graham), Fred P., & Jessie Lawson.
