Prime Minister of Portugal. He served as the Prime Minister of Portugal from October 14, 1890 to January 17, 1892. Prior to becoming prime minister, he was a member of the military and attained the rank of general. He also was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1861. He was Minister of the Navy and Overseas , Public Works, Commerce and Industry and the War. He is best remembered for his initiatives for reforming education. During his term, he was confronted with a republican uprising in Porto and the Portuguese state bankruptcy of 1891. Afterwards, his government fell. He was awarded the Grand Cross of the Royal Military Order of the Tower and Sword.
