Prime Minister of Portugal. He served on three different occasions being the 21st, 24th, and 29th prime minister. He first served from June 6, 1856 to March 16, 1859. His second term was from July 4, 1860 to April 17, 1865 and lastly from August 11, 1869 to May 19, 1870. Already a royal, he became the 1st Duke of Loulé in 1862. Prior to becoming prime minister, he was in the cavalry and held several ministerial posts including foreign affairs and navy. He was elected to the Constituent Assembly which would approve the Constitution of 1838. He was a deputy and later a senator. Amidst party turmoil and government changes, he would surface as prime minister. Helpful in his pursuits was the marriage to Infanta Ana de Jesus Maria, younger daughter of King John VI of Portugal. With this marriage, he became brother-in-law of King Miguel I of Portugal and Emperor Pedro I of Brazil, and paternal uncle of Queen Maria II of Portugal and Emperor Pedro II of Brazil. He is best remembered for his kinship with the royal family, his consensus building skills and as leader of the Historic Party.
