Matilda was the daughter of Benjamin HUFFORD (or Hufer), a watchmaker, and Lovina HIRSCH. Matilda's father died when she was young; Matilda's mother then married Charles BINGNER, and Matilda's last name is sometimes seen as BINGNER.

Matilda first married Silas SHIPLEY. On March 28, 1895, in Ohiopyle, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, Matilda birthed a son: Daniel Wesley SHIPLEY.

Matilda birthed three other SHIPLEY children:
Charles Andrew (1884-1932); Rebecca Jane (1878-1951); and George Lewis (1880-1945). Matilda's husband Silas died in 1897. In 1900, Matilda was in Fayette Co., PA, with her sons George Lewis and Daniel Wesley. Matilda's 2nd marriage was to the widower Henry D. ALTFATHER on September 20, 1903; he died in 1921.
