Mr. Ryan helped establish the Bishop Becker Council in New Castle, the Bishop Curtis and Bishop Monoghan Councils in Wilmington and helped revitalize the Santa Maria Council and create the Archbishop Fitzmaurice General Assembly. He was Master of the Fourth Degree Calvert Province, State Secretary, and First State Deputy for two terms (1944 and 1946), first president of the Past State Deputies Association and Master of the Jurisdiction of Delaware 1970-1974. An accomplished public speaker, he was toastmaster at many events.
Mr. Ryan, a machinist, worked 39 years at the DuPont Jackson Laboratories in Pennsgrove, NJ where he supervised a large staff designing and making pilot scale chemical reactors. In 1945 he was honored by the Nation for his work on the Manhattan Project that led to the Atomic Bomb and the end of WWII. An entrepreneur, he and Francis Lenoir, founded Castle Machine to build and patent customized research equipment for the chemical industry. After his retirement in 1971, Mr. Ryan served on the New Castle City Council, was chairman of the City Annexation Commission, and later served on the New Castle County Board of Appeals.
A life-long member of St. Peter the Apostle Church in New Castle, he was a member of The Holy Name Society. He attended St. Peter's Grammar School and was awarded an athletic scholarship by Salesianum High School in Wilmington where he played football and baseball. At his death he was the oldest living graduate, class of 1924. He was an avid Phillies and Red Sox fan, enjoyed fishing, hunting and bowling.
For 36 years he was a steady member of the New Castle Senate, an informal association of retired men who meet daily at the wharf in New Castle. Mr. Ryan was a raconteur well known for his wit and humor. He had an outstanding memory and was a valuable resource to historians as he recounted in detail many events that occurred in New Castle as early as 1912.
His beloved wife of fifty-eight years, Dorothy née Hall, preceded in him death, June 12, 1985. Mr. Ryan survived his four brothers, Hugh, William, James, and Harry and his only sister Elizabeth Fitzgibbons. His is survived by six children: Paul V. of Bullhead City, AZ, Elaine (Mrs. Lewis Watson) of New Castle, Dr. John D. (and Barbara) of Wilmington, Patrick J. of Elkton, MD, Dr. Michael F. (and Anne) of Bridgewater, NJ and Ann Marie Ryan with whom he shared his home.
He leaves 23 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will take place at St. Peter the Apostle Church in New Castle on Friday, December 1st from 6-9 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday December 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at the church.
